A romantic getaway in the centre of Ghent, with charming hosts and a sharing and convivial ethos

Located in the centre of Ghent, opposite the castle of the Counts of Flanders and on the banks of the Lys, this guest house has been run by a charming, local retired couple since 2008. Historically, the site of this house was a church, there are even remains of naves on the walls of the inner courtyard. For a long time after that, the building served as a restaurant. It took 3 years to renovate and transform the soulful building into the warm guest house it is today. The homely feeling was created by the owner, who has a real gift and vision for decoration. The whole house is in a “Flamant” style, a Belgian decoration store, with shades of beige, grey and white. The friendly atmosphere goes hand in hand with its owners who, while respecting the privacy of their guests, like to meet and build relationships with them.

The hotel is named after the restaurant that had occupied the premises for years (De Waterzooi). It offers 3 suites, each occupying one floor of the house. All in the same spirit, they consist of a small living room, a bar, a double bed, a bathroom and a large terrace with two deckchairs. They are furnished with care and attention to detail, which is what makes them feel so homely.

Guests also have access to the cosy ground floor, where they can make the most of the library, lounge, dining room where breakfast is served, kitchen and interior courtyard.

THE service

During the visit, the owners proudly told us that on average, 20% of the guests return to stay with them. They shared the secret to their famous breakfast with us; they insist on a variation of their offer, whether that be the service and table decoration, or the breads, cheeses, etc. Some things remains the same, their squeezed orange juice, banana smoothie and a mix of seasonal fruits. In addition, a garage is available to guests not far from the guesthouse.

Kay and Christian are a friendly couple who put their heart and soul into managing this bed and breakfast. We had a great time with them, they took the time to listen to us and tell their story.
They are clearly passionate about hosting, and they love sharing what they have and what they know with new people.
