Discreetly nestled in an alleyway, a stone's throw from the Meir in Antwerp, we discovered Hotel Julien. At the push of a button on a beautiful doorbell, we entered the reception. We immediately noticed the high ceilings and a pretty bay window that opens onto a small patio. Marissa, the hotel manager, led us to a large living room on the other side of the patio. Like the design of the hotel, the original architecture is mixed with contemporary works of art, giving it a "neo-renaissance" style. The walls are decorated with period woodwork and the ceiling mouldings are original, making it a warm and welcoming mansion. You will want to stop here, read or have a cup of tea by the fire. The patio terrace appears as a small haven of peace, inviting you to relax and sip a little drink. We are also impressed by the diversity of the artworks, some of which come from local and European galleries and designers: Gallery 51, Ghesq, Serax, Michael Wolf, Peter Lindbergh, Vitra, Fritz Hansen... The owner of the hotel (who also owns August Hotel) is the mastermind behind the design of the hotel: avant-garde, she merges Scandinavian, contemporary and classic/ancient styles to perfection.
This high-end boutique hotel has 21 rooms of four different styles, a breakfast room, a spa, a bar and a rooftop terrace open to the public. Each room is different where architectural heritage and contemporary design blend brilliantly. However, we recommend the rooms in the "experience" range, which offer the best value for money. Most of the rooms are embellished with large windows and high ceilings, painted in light tones with colourful touches and accessories that together provide that pleasant feeling of natural light and life. Each of them has the same pretty blue linen bedspread, as well as "Aesop" beauty products. The hotel offers a real artistic diversity and respect for its heritage through its restoration and its choice of works of art and furniture. A little gem, a real work of art in itself.
At Hotel Julien, quality is fundamental, whether in the choice of decoration, materials or beauty and food products. Everything has been meticulously chosen to offer a high quality experience. For example, breakfast, which for us is a key element of the hotel experience, is served in Serax and GuesQ (ceramic) kitchenware. A buffet offering local products: cheese from the Berchem cheese dairy, bread from the famous Domestic bakery, chocolate from Antwerp Jitsk or muesli and Granola from Floom. The bar offers light meal options at any time of the day or night.
But this aim to offer a premium experience would not be possible without an equally good level of service. At Hotel Julien, you will be looked after by the staff throughout your stay and you will benefit from a personalised service from the moment you arrive, right up until your departure.
At Hotel Julien, Aesop beauty products are available in large glass bottles that are refilled, cleaning products are ecoLab and a water regulation system is implemented to optimize water consumption. The products offered for breakfast are local and seasonal whenever possible.
A green service option is also proposed when a guest stays several nights, which consists of only washing the linen that the visitor wants to replace. Finally, the bar tries to minimize waste.
