Picturesque hotel in Belgium: serenity, romance and sport

Located at the end of a private road in the village of Mol, Hippocampus is nestled in a beautiful garden with a water lily-filled pond lined with weeping willows and laurels. The setting portrays a scene from an impressionist painting: full of serenity and romance. As soon as we arrived, we were struck by the terraces of the hotel and all we could think of was having an aperitif in the sun.

The hotel offers eight rooms, a restaurant and two beautiful terraces overlooking the garden. It feels like a home; the large white building is pleasant and friendly. Outside, the well-kept garden can be admired with serenity from the terraces (south-facing) or can be discovered on a leisurely and romantic stroll. Inside, period floors that creak under our feet led us to the bar and restaurant. Upstairs are the eight bedrooms and the breakfast room. The first floor offers four large rooms, a little more luxurious and spacious than the ones on the second floor. Each room is named after a child and grandchild of the owner. They are all different, furnished with an assortment of antique and modern furniture. The bathrooms are functional. We have a secret preference for the room named "Arthur", nicely decorated with a wonderful view of the garden.

THE service

Breakfast is offered as an optional buffet and is only surpassed by the chef’s cuisine! The restaurant of the hotel is worth the detour, the chef has an à la carte menu but will always propose a daily special. Don't forget to book, especially at the weekend. The restaurant is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. You can also rent bicycles or Vespas, these will be delivered to the hotel on request only.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to meet the owner of the establishment who is also the chef of the restaurant, Francis Scheyaert. Charming and above all a passionate and talented chef who has notably made his mark in beautiful houses such as "Cheval Blanc" in Reims or "Comme Chez soi" in Brussels.

Whenever possible, breakfast consists of local and seasonal products. You may even have the opportunity to taste homemade jams. As for the restaurant, the chef advocates fresh and regional cuisine.

THE little extra

The swimming pool can be accessed depending on the season. Did you know that the Kempen plateau enjoys a microclimate, which makes it up to 4 degrees warmer than Brussels? This climate and the sandy soil are also the secret of its very special vegetation.

From 104€ to 144€ depending on the size of the room and the breakfast option.
